My name is Joanne Rath. Though Paula and I have not met in person, I feel like I have known her for a long time. We first connected through the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation because I requested a mentor in August of 2022, just three months before my husband passed away from cholangiocarcinoma. Paula and I spoke on the phone weekly for at least four or five months. She was the best support I could have, support from someone who had lost her husband from the same cancer. She could answer questions that were hard to ask, but questions I wanted to be able to ask someone, things like how does hospice work? What is the end of life really like? I will always remember the first conversation we had. I talked, she listened. Eventually, she told me a little of her story. But it meant so much to be able to talk to someone who definitely understood what was happening in my life.
It’s been not quite two years since my husband, Hank passed away. Paula and I still talk on the phone every couple of months, and I know that if I need to talk, or need some support, she will be there. And now, we are just good friends who care about each other.
